07 Aug 3 Tips for Protecting Personal Time
There is plenty written about the need for maintaining some type of work life balance, but I think we still need to be reminded of its importance on a regular basis. As a business owner, and especially in the early stages of owning a business, if we are not careful our personal time can quickly become eroded and consumed with our work.
If you find it hard to escape your business during your personal time, here are three ideas you might want to consider.
3 Tips for Protecting Your Personal Time
Schedule Plenty of Personal Activities
I believe time away from business should be time devoted to people, places, and things that gives us the most joy in life. You would think we would have regularly scheduled time to pursue these activities, but many people approach the weekend without any planned personal time at all.
It’s hard to protect our personal time if we don’t plan for it. Whether going to a party, reading a book or going for a walk. Without preplanned activities, it becomes much easier to be distracted by work related issues if we’re not careful.
Limit Phone Calls – Even from Employees
One day, after realizing how many phone calls I was receiving from my employees during my time off, I went into work the next day and told them they were no longer allowed to call me on my time off. No Exceptions! As you might imagine, this came at quite a shock to them.
It dawned on me that if I didn’t put a stop to phone calls interrupting my personal time, I was never going to have any personal time. Phone calls can eat up a lot of time, so be on the guard for them. It is amazing how much fun you can have when the phone doesn’t ring.
Don’t Answer Work Related Emails
Several years ago I stopped checking and responding to all work related emails during my time off. I am sure there are exceptions, but in most cases work emails can wait until you are back to work. My clients are aware of this and know they will never receive a response back from me until I am back to work.
Protect Your Valuable Time at all Cost
I know there is no perfect scenario, and some businesses have to be willing to take phone calls day and night. Yes, there are situations we cannot control. However, many times by simply installing and enforcing a boundary we can free up and protect our valuable time.
Life happens in the blink of an eye. We can never get back the time we’ve already spent. We build a business and work in order to give us the life we want and desire, so let’s just make sure this is not reversed, and instead having our work taking away our life.
